Available for sale at the Rothwell Gallery in Ottawa.
This sleek pendant showcases authentic Fordite, a rare material composed of layers of auto paint from dozens of classic vehicles crafted in Detroit. Set in a sterling silver setting, this lightweight pendant stands-out with its unique grey, black, white and red flecks, perfect for any collector or statement jewelry enthusiast.
Fordite is not technically a gemstone because it isn't a rock or mineral, it is paint! When the Ford painting shops were retooled for powder painting, crews went in to remove layers of paint on the walls and floors from years of painting Ford vehicles. The paint was removed in chunks, which skilled lapidarists took and made into cabochons and called it Fordite. Apparently it takes almost 1000 layers of paint to create one inch of Fordite thickness which accounts for the collectability and price. Original Fordite is rare and valuable.
