A ghostly grey Dendritic Opal has spots of pale grey translucency with scattered black fern-like minerals. The rectangular Sterling silver dog tag setting has a reticulated textured (created by surface heating) silver over copper. 2" x 1".
Dendritic Opals are common opals (no flash) with fernlike (moss and trees) patterning made from minerals such as iron or manganese. Like all opals, the best Dendritic Opals are found in Australia, but they are common around the world. What makes a Dendritic Opal valuable is the pattern and in the case of earrings, how they match. These are actually difficult stones to cut because the opal is very soft and prone to chipping and doesn't shine well, whereas the dendrites are made of metal and are rather difficult to cut well. So a hand-cut Dendritic Opal that has a good polish is something that takes a fair amount of skill and time to produce.
For the spiritual/metaphysical interest: Dendritic Opals are associated with life energy and harmony and are thought to assist self-awareness and clarity.
