Authentic Fordite (see below) cabochon from Detroit set in a simple Sterling Silver pendant setting. Lightweight because Fordite weighs far less than stone. The colours are grey, black, white and red with flecks of metallic. An excellent collector or conversation piece of statement jewelry.
Fordite (original - authentic) Silver Pendant. Fordite is not technically a gemstone because it isn't a rock or mineral, it is paint! When the Ford painting shops were retooled for powder painting crews went in to remove layers of paint on the walls and floors from years of painting Ford vehicles. The paint was removed in chunks, which skilled lapidarists took and made into cabochons and called it Fordite. Apparently it takes almost 1000 layers of paint to create one inch of Fordite thickness which accounts for the collectability and price. Original Fordite is rare and valuable.
We collect gemstones in a manner that is ethically and environmentally responsible. We occasionally purchase gemstones from fellow lapidarists who practice in a similar manner.
